Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryVERDEEN MARION NEUFELD
Verdeen's journey of a lifetime began on February 23, 1929, and came to a peaceful end at the age of 97 on April 4, 2026. Cremation has taken place. Verdeen was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Carrie Scott; her husband of 74 years, Harold; siblings Joyce Limerick, Margaret Kulchycki, Thomasina Smith, Donna Cuddy, and Robert Scott. She will be lovingly remembered by daughters Donna Heymann and Kimberley Neufeld, sister Patricia Shalley, sister-in-law Edith Neufeld, brother-in-law John Konrad, grandchildren Erich (Jenn), Alexis, Lauren (Ryan); and great-grandchildren Taylor, Mikaela and Emma; and many nieces and nephews.
Verdeen was the eldest of seven children, born in Winnipeg to Thomas and Carrie (Smith) Scott of Glen Ewen and Oxbow, small towns in southeast Saskatchewan. In 1940, the family left East Kildonan to return to the Scott homestead in Glen Ewen. She had many fond memories of her years on the farm, and from this idyllic time she retained her love of animals and nature. The family moved back to Winnipeg in 1943, settling in the Weston neighbourhood. Though it had been her dream to attend university after high school, unfortunately, due to a variance with the Saskatchewan curriculum, she was unable to enroll in the University Entrance program. Verdeen graduated from Daniel McIntyre with a diploma in Commercial Business Correspondence, which nonetheless proved very beneficial in her future. First hired in 1946 by Morgan Nicholson Insurance Agents as a receptionist-stenographer, she later joined the Royal Bank as secretary to the manager.
In 1947, Verdeen was introduced by mutual friends to a very sports-minded Harold Neufeld. They were married on July 7, 1951. The couple moved into a ground floor suite in a house on River Avenue, rent $45 per month, which was all they could afford as Harold was still a student in the Chartered Accountancy program. Harold and Verdeen purchased their first house in Fraser's Grove on Boxing Day, 1955, which remained their home for the next seventy years. They were soon blessed with the birth of their two daughters, Donna and Kimberley. They later became proud grandparents of three grandchildren Erich, Alexis, and Lauren, and great-grandparents to Taylor, Mikaela and Emma.
In 1958, Harold started his own CA practice. Verdeen was an integral part of his success, her expert secretarial and typing skills invaluable to his business in these early days. With her beauty, style, grace, kindness and intelligence, Verdeen continued to be an asset to Harold's endeavours throughout his professional, and later government, career.
At age 51, she finally got her chance to go to university, enrolling at the University of Winnipeg. In retirement years, Verdeen enjoyed their summers at the Silver Harbour cottage, and winters in St. Pete's, Florida. Everything Verdeen did, she did well: a skilled bowler and golfer; an excellent cook, sewer, knitter and tapestry-maker. She is fondly remembered by all who knew her as the bond who brought people together, a thoughtful hostess celebrating life's events and making people feel special. Verdeen felt blessed to have been able to share in these many milestones with family and friends.
Verdeen's "Farewell"
When those we love go out of sight, they are never out of mind
For they live on in the hearts of those they left behind
When we count our many blessings, it isn't hard for us to see
That what we value most in life are the blessings that are free
For it is not what we possess that signifies our wealth
But the blessings that are priceless, like our family, our friends, and our health.
On that note, a heartfelt thanks and praise to our Lord for the many blessings he has bestowed upon Verdeen's family over the many years. She also wished to thank all those who travelled with her on this journey. May the Lord bless you and keep you. Amen.
A Celebration of Harold and Verdeen's Lives will be held at 11am Tuesday July 7, 2026, at First Mennonite Church, 922 Notre Dame Avenue, Winnipeg. Flowers gratefully declined. If so desired, a donation to a charity of your choice, or the Mennonite Central Committee, would be sincerely appreciated.
